Why AI hasnât replaced software engineers, and wonât â a good, level-headed read.
- It argues against the hype that AI will cause mass layoffs and be the âend of software engineeringâ. The framing I liked: the job is really decide, then execute, then deliver. AI mostly compresses the execute part (writing the code), so that slice of the pie shrinks and more of our time shifts to deciding what to build and being accountable for delivering it.
- I had a bit of an âoh shitâ moment last week watching Claude Fable crush hard problems in one shot, so I donât think any of this is settled. It really makes you think about where our work is heading.
Itâs the piece that pushed me to get my whole engineering team together to talk openly about how our work is changing, and that shift from execute towards decide and deliver is a big part of it.
